Autoglass
Market leader£400 - £650 cash
The default for most UK insurers. Owned by Belron, the same parent as Safelite in the US. National coverage, every postcode, every vehicle type, full ADAS calibration in-house. Cash prices are typically the highest of the three nationals because volume is largely insurer-funded. Tends to use OEE (aftermarket) glass unless you specify OEM at booking.
National Windscreens
Franchise model£250 - £450 cash
Second-largest UK chain, around 110 branches and a heavy mobile fleet. Quality varies a little branch to branch because it is a franchise model, but the network is large and ADAS calibration is well-established. Typically 20% to 40% cheaper on cash work than Autoglass. Worth a quote.
Auto Windscreens
Value option£200 - £400 cash
Third national chain, generally the cheapest of the three nationals on cash work. Replacement from £199 in some areas, chip repair from £75, ADAS calibration from £175 listed publicly. Good value for straightforward jobs and standard cars.
Halfords
Chip repair onlyaround £45
Walk-in chip repair at most stores. Drive Plus loyalty members get a discount. Halfords does not do full windscreen replacement: they refer you elsewhere. Good for a same-day chip fix when you happen to be near a store.
Independent fitters
Cheapest option£180 - £350 cash
Independent specialists are the cheapest path for cash work. Use myWindscreen.co.uk or Checkatrade to find rated local fitters with reviews. Confirm ADAS capability and ask which glass brand they will use. The very best independents do better work than the chains; the worst should be avoided.

Booking platformsVaries
myWindscreen.co.uk and similar platforms quote across multiple fitters in your postcode. Useful for cash work because you see real local pricing. Less useful for insurance claims, which usually go through your insurer's own glass helpline.
How to get the best price.
- Get three quotes. Always Autoglass plus one other national plus one independent. The spread is often £150 to £250.
- Check insurer routing. Some insurers only cover their preferred network. Going outside it can mean the claim is rejected.
- Confirm ADAS is included. Quote must list calibration as part of the price, not a separate add-on.
- Specify glass type. OEM or OEE (aftermarket). Cars with HUD or acoustic features benefit from OEM.
- Mobile vs workshop. Mobile is fine for non-ADAS jobs. Workshop avoids a second appointment for ADAS.
- Check warranty. Lifetime is standard at the chains. Independents vary, get it in writing.
FAQ
Is Autoglass worth the extra cost?+
For an insurance-funded job, Autoglass is the default for most insurers and there is no extra cost to you. For cash work, Autoglass tends to be the highest priced of the three nationals. The extra buys consistent process, lifetime warranty, full ADAS capability and the highest brand recognition. If you are insurance-funded, accept it. If you are paying cash, get a National Windscreens or Auto Windscreens quote to compare.
Can I choose my own fitter on insurance?+
Sometimes. Many UK insurers route claims to a preferred network and will refuse to pay an out-of-network fitter. A few will authorise an independent if you ring the glass helpline first and explain why. OEM-only luxury cars and HUD-equipped vehicles are the most likely cases for authorisation. Always confirm in writing before booking the work.
Do independent fitters use genuine glass?+
Most use OEE (aftermarket) glass that meets the same BS safety standard as OEM. Some specialist independents stock OEM. Always ask which brand of glass the fitter intends to use, whether it includes any heating or sensor features your car has, and whether they will provide a written warranty. Pilkington, Fuyao, AGC and NordGlass are common reputable suppliers.
